What is the Saint Andrew’s Scholarship?

Since 1956, the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York (SASNY) has provided over 200 scholarships for graduate study in Scotland with an aim to promote cultural interchange, scholarship, and goodwill between Scotland and the United States. In recognition of the benefits of higher education, the Society provides significant funding for two Scottish graduate students annually to study in the United States and at least three American students with Scottish descent to study at any university in Scotland.

How do I apply and what do I need?

Information for Recommendations

Please comment on the candidate's fitness for the course of study proposed and the suitability of the university chosen (why their studies and proposed career would be well served by studying at a Scottish university). Observations about the candidate's general character and ability to be a good ambassador for the U.S., as well as academic standing and ability are important to the Saint Andrew’s Scholarship Selection Committee. 

Format and submission: 

  • Letters have no word limit but should be on letterhead and signed and sent as a pdf.  
  • Recommenders are asked to send their letters by email attachment directly to Christine Overstreet (overstreet@amherst.edu) by October 20, 2025
