Who is eligible?

SASNY lists the following as eligibility requirements:

• Senior undergraduates who will have obtained a bachelor's degree by the spring;
• U.S. citizens with some Scottish descent (must have proof of U.S. citizenship and evidence of Scottish heritage); 
• demonstrated financial need shown by certification from a college official (financial services) that assistance would be needed to pursue graduate study in Scotland (this is based on having received financial aid at AC); 
• clarity of purpose in pursuing graduate study, and study in Scotland in particular (finalists must furnish proof of having applied to their selected school in Scotland and must gain acceptance if finalists); 
• a strong academic record preferably with distinguishing work in your major field of study; 
• a demonstrated commitment to extracurricular activities; 
• qualifications that enable you to be a good ambassador of the U.S. 

Does this application require endorsement by the college?

Yes! The College may nominate ONE applicant each year to the SASNY. Applicants will submit their applications to the Office of Fellowships by the internal deadline. Their applications will be reviewed by the Faculty Committee on Student Fellowships, who may also conduct a campus interview before deciding on a nominee.

How much funding is awarded and how can I use it?

The SAS Macmillan and Saint Andrew’s Scholarships provide a total of $35,000 in funding to be used initially against tuition, then board, transportation and other expenses.

What is Saint Andrew’s history and mission?

On November 19, 1756, a small group of native-born Scots and Scottish American men met in lower Manhattan to form what is now the oldest established charitable organization in the Empire State — the Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York (SASNY). The Society has grown considerably over the last two and two-thirds centuries, and for over 250 years has provided charitable relief, academic opportunities, and has fostered fellowship around a common Scottish heritage. SASNY embraces its original mission of helping Scots in need, and its charitable work in the New York and tristate communities is provided for directly by the membership, through fund-raising and other social events.
