What is the Goldwater Scholarship?

Internal Deadline:

JANUARY 10, 2025 at 12:00 PM

Contact the Office of Fellowships for support at least one month before this deadline.

Established by the Treasury of the United States, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation supports the Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Funding for awards and administrative expenses derives from interest on the Trust Fund, invested in U.S. securities.

By providing scholarships to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering, the Goldwater Foundation is helping ensure that the U.S. is producing the number of highly-qualified professionals the Nation needs in these critical fields.

Strong candidates typically will:

  • have had the opportunity to participate in research, have independently investigated theory, or an issue related to their field of interest
  • have been awarded internships in research facilities or worked as lab assistants
  • have been involved in mathematics/science/engineering related student organizations or employment; have participated early in graduate courses; or have other related accomplishments outside the classroom
  • be planning to pursue doctoral degrees; those interested in medicine are only eligible if planning to do research; students planning a career in teaching science/math are not strong candidates.

How do I Apply?

Carefully read our Goldwater Scholarship Application page for detailed guidance on the application itself and the steps you should take to prepare a competitive application. This application requires institutional endorsement.

Information for Recommenders

The mission of the Goldwater Foundation is to identify and support the nation’s next generation of research leaders in science, mathematics, and engineering. Letters of recommendation play a critical role in helping the Goldwater Foundation identify the country’s most promising talent.

Mentors should spend most of their time discussing the student’s involvement in and, most importantly,
contributions to research. Research mentors should keep remarks about their research program
brief but provide enough detail for the reader to develop a general understanding of the work.

See IMPORTANT ADVICE for ALL RECOMMENDERS from the GOLDWATER FOUNDATION, which provides some do's and don'ts when it comes to recommendation letters, especially those coming from research mentors, non-mentors, and other course instructors.

Format and submission: Goldwater letters are REQUIRED (by the Foundation) to be no more than TWO pages, have one-inch margins on all sides, be single spaced, use 12 pt font (typeface is unspecified), and be printed on letterhead and signed. Do not include hyperlinks. Materials that are hyperlinked to letters will not be read. Letters that do not adhere to the format will not be read by the foundation reviewers.

Please save your signed letter as a PDF file and send it via email attachment to Christine Overstreet (coverstreet@amherst.edu) by January 10, 2025. Our office will upload your letter to the Goldwater portal.
